Should you sand before top coat? If the project has a high gloss finish or a clear top coat, lightly sand* the project with a medium grit sanding block. This will enable new paint coats to bond with existing paint coats.
How long can you wait to apply clear coat? Allow 30 minutes after base coat color has been applied to apply the clear coat.
Do I have to wait 4 hours between coats? After your first coat of paint is dry, it’s safe to recoat typically after four to six hours. A good rule of thumb is to wait at least three hours to recoat your paint or primer if it’s water-based. Waiting 24 hours is best for oil-based paint and primer.
Should you lightly sand before clear coat? If you have to sand the basecoat at any step it must be recoated with another layer of color before moving on to the clearcoat step. Sanding between layers of clearcoat is also not recommended. Wet sanding and polishing the final layer will yield a better result than doing it between each coat.
